SHE has a knack for acting, it may even be the only real talent she possesses. She can bewitch and draw in an audience, hold their attention in the strong iron grip that her mother would possibly claim Margrethe has inherited from her. Margrethe will say, however, the skill is entirely her own; there is good reason, after all, that her mother is a widow without sons and without true control over her late husband's business. Whereas Margrethe, wholly by her own efforts, has become the most famed actress of the decade, living splendidly by herself, with the support of patrons and lovers, and she has no intention of settling down, marrying, having children. Her life belongs only to her. She will give it to no one else, no one but herself and the stage.
+ history
[ tw: mention of stillbirth, loss of infant babies and parental death. ]

Oldest daughter and only surviving child of Franka and Niels-Ole Clemmensen. Her childhood consisted of repeatedly watching her mother being pregnant and either bearing stillborn children or giving birth to babies that never lived to see their third birthday. Five of such siblings Margrethe had, five they lost as a family, Margrethe remaining the only one to live among her parents' children.

Then, when Margrethe was fifteen, her father suddenly died while in the process of expanding on his business, a department store specializing in bread and pastries, as well as - more recently - grocery import and edible goods. Her mother didn't have the skills to take over the business herself, but had to blindly trust his business partners who treated her kindly, but still pocketed more than their fair share. Her father had always been the encouraging, nurturing of her parents, so Margrethe's grief turned into a desire to express herself as freely as possible, believing that was what he would have wanted for her and it definitely was what she wanted for herself.

She wanted to become an actress, her father and she both having loved the theatre.

Nevertheless, her mother forbade her to seek employment at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, thinking actresses were all loose women, prostitutes, but this only meant that Margrethe secretly arranged for an apartment to be readied for her in the city, paying out of her own monthly allowance; she sent out her maid, Nelly, to finish the practicalities and then, in the middle of the night, she left her family house to pursue an acting career.

For half a year, her mother tried to punish her by ignoring her existence, yet still sent her money, although only half the usual amount. Which meant, for half a year, Margrethe lived almost entirely on her own income - along with Nelly, who during those months became her lover, and they got by, humbly but efficiently. Margrethe was accepted at the theatre, slept with all the right people and before her mother could drag her back to Valby, she had landed her first leading role.

In the years that followed, her mother grudgingly accepted Margrethe's fast-tracked career at the Royal Theatre in return for introducing her daughter to as many eligible bachelor's as possible, to at least have her marry someone rich and respectable to help her reputation along. Yet, Margrethe had no intention of marrying, of giving herself to another person, submitting to a man and, least of all, be expected to produce children. She detested the very thought.

Let her live free! Let her be happy on her own!
